The rise of modern show business can be traced
to the decline of religious repression in the 17th century.
Its early indelible manifestations: the
ecstatic joining
of show business to popular culture - by and for the people!
Commédia, Shakespeare, Lyric Opera.
In all of these examples, it was never
about "Art."
It was rather about popular entertainment as "Religion."
Not a religion predicated on beliefs -
certainly not on "God,"
but rather one firmly rooted in experience; in physicality,
humor, struggle, story & participation.
This is the religion of the circus, of
magic and of the dream.
